Volvo's brand image is stuck somewhere between "premium" and "luxury," but the Swedish automaker aims to move further upscale with a fresh design language and a new generation of vehicles powered by more fuel-efficient engines.
New mid-sized and large models will begin arriving in 2014 based on Volvo's lightweight SPA platform.
The vehicles will use Volvo's coming generation of smaller four-cylinder engines. Executives say turbocharging and plug-in hybrids will give the vehicles more power even as the automaker phases out its five- and six-cylinder engines.
Stefan Jacoby, CEO of Volvo Car Corp., says that with the price of gasoline and coming fuel economy regulations, engine displacement no longer will be linked to luxury--at least in Volvo's world.
Rather, he says, high-tech fuel-saving technology that produces neck-snapping performance will be Volvo's recipe.

Acura has priced the 2012 TSX sedan and wagon, including the one we're most interested in, the new TSX Special Edition. Visual changes on the SE include a revised body kit and 17-inch alloys with a polished finish against a dark gray background. Inside, the SE gets black perforated-suede seats with red stitching and highlights.
Pricing for the 2012 TSX SE begins at $30,810* with either a five-speed automatic or six-speed manual . That's just a grand more than the base TSX, which strikes us as a pretty fair deal. Order the Technology Package, which adds an upgraded audio system and navigation, and the MSRP rises to $32,910.
The aforementioned prices are for TSX models with the 201-horsepower 2.4-liter four. Upgrading to the 280-horsepower V6 (and required automatic) increases the cost of entry to $35,350, or $38,450 with the Technology Package.

In his New York Times comparison of heavy-duty pickup trucks, Ezra Dyer opens with a provocative comparison:
Heavy-Duty pickup trucks are the supercars of the truck world. They have more power than drivers are likely ever to exploit, and bragging rights depend on statistics that are, in practical terms, theoretical.
How does he figure?
While you can’t buy a diesel engine in a mainstream light-duty pickup, heavy-duty pickups now offer propulsion suitable for a tandem-axle dump truck.
I’m not exaggerating. Ford’s 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel V-8 packs 400 horsepower and 800 pound-feet of torque; the base engine in a Peterbilt 348 dump truck offers a mere 260 horsepower and 660 pound feet. Does your pickup really need more power than a Peterbilt?
I’m guessing most HD truck owners won’t take kindly to the question, especially coming a scolding Gray Lady. But if you read the full review, you’ll find that Dyer was able to locate at least one contractor willing to admit that he realized he just didn’t need his HD’s overabundance of ability. It goes against the grain of the “bigger, faster, tougher, more” marketing message that has helped make trucks such a huge part of the American market, but is it possible that the tide is turning? Have pickups improved too much? The huge sales of Ecoboost V6-powered F-Series certainly suggests the we may just be moving towards a more pragmatic truck-buying market…

Toyota NA chairman Inaba calls Hyundai Sonata "honorable contender".
When does a mid-size sedan become a top-notch competitor to the Toyota Camry? The answer is apparently whenever said competitor begins stealing market share from America's top-selling sedan.
Bloomberg reports that Toyota North America Chairman Yoshimi Inaba called the Hyundai Sonata "a very honorable contender in the market" during an interview earlier this week. Inaba adds that Toyota has great respect for the strong-selling Hyundai, and we're guessing they're not the only automaker keeping an ever closer eye on Camp Hyundai. Sales of the Sonata soared by 35 percent in 2010 to 196,623 units. Meanwhile, 2010 Camry sales dropped by 31 percent to 327,804 units. To make matters worse for Toyota and the Camry, supply disruptions stemming from the March 11 earthquake and tsunami have further hurt Camry sales while the Sonata continues to attract new buyers. In fact, the Sonata outsold the Camry in May, in part because of Toyota's production issues.
But while the Sonata has been gaining on the Camry, that trend could reverse itself with an all-new Camry set to arrive later this year. Toyota President Akio Toyoda already told U.S. dealers in June that the new model will feature a more contemporary design, and we're hearing rumblings of a hugely improved interior, as well.

NEWS EDITOR GREG MIGLIORE: The 2011 Hyundai Elantra GLS is definitely a solid value. After spending a weekend in a (relatively) blinged-out version recently, and now this tester, I am impressed. For $20,000, even with options, you get navigation, satellite radio and nice packaging inside and out. That's a deal.
I like the drive character of this Hyundai. There's plenty of power from the 148-hp, four-cylinder mill, and the six-speed automatic pairs well with that engine. Dial up more than 5,000 rpm, and you can shoot into open spaces on the expressway with ease. Heck, redline it and this thing has a respectable kick for such a modest engine output. The steering has some connection, which is felt during turns, though it's largely a light feel that mainstream consumers will like. The chassis is comfortable yet well sprung, and the body offers a composed dynamic most of the time. It was thrown a little by road imperfections, but nothing out of the ordinary.
Inside is a smartly laid-out cabin, and the center stack is easy to use and handsome. I found a very comfortable driving position, which isn't always easy to do in smaller cars. I have to give props to Hyundai, too, for making a reasonably quiet interior setting. Yes, there is some four-banger engine buzz, and on a wet, windy spring morning, I was aware of the outside. But for $20,000, it's quiet enough.
The styling stands out, and Hyundai is definitely not afraid to swagger with its small cars. Nice effort.

We’ve already seen plenty of spy shots of the next-generation 2012 Mercedes-Benz ML-Class but in this latest round of shots we have a prototype fitted with the new AMG Sports Pack destined for the upcoming luxury SUV.
This isn’t the high-performance 2012 Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG spied earlier. The AMG Sports Pack is essentially a sporty trim level for the ML and typically features accessories such as custom bumpers with enlarged cooling ducts, stylized rear diffusers, polished stainless steel exhaust tips and AMG light alloy custom wheels.
For the interior, the AMG Sports Pack for the new ML should include sporty bucket seats, carbon fiber or possibly Alcantara trim, AMG floor mats, a pedal cluster in brushed stainless steel with rubber studs, black roof lining and Nappa trim for the gear-shifter.
Previous models fitted with an AMG Sports Pack have also received special ‘M’ manual transmissions mode designed for their automatic gearbox.
The barely disguised state in which this prototype was parading around in also suggests that the redesigned ML is set for a debut in the very near future, most likely at September’s 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show. Its showroom appearance, however, likely won’t take place until sometime in the first half of next year.

General Motors is finishing up the development of the 2012 Chevrolet Malibu (to be marketed as Epica in other markets), and this almost-done prototype gives us a very good glimpse as to what's in store for the all-new 'Bu.
The Malibu will ride on the shortened version of GM's Epsilon II platform – the architecture that underpins both the Buick Regal and LaCrosse – though our spies note that the new car seems to be a bit longer and wider than the model currently on sale. Chevy's signature Bowtie grille is nicely incorporated into a decidedly LaCrosse-inspired front end, but we aren't quite sure how we feel about the Camaro-like taillamps and longer rear deck. Still, we'll wait until the camouflage is stripped away before making final judgments.
Following Korea's lead with the Hyundai Sonata, GM is expected to only offer four-cylinder powertrains in the 2012 Malibu, so look for both a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter and turbocharged 2.0-liter engine to be on tap. Additionally, a hybrid configuration is reportedly in the works, as is all-wheel drive.

It soon became a sales success, and buyers snapped them up for both their off-road capability and their rugged styling. In 2000, Nissan sold nearly 89,000 Xterras. Times change, and today the SUV segment is old news. Left Lane News reports that only the Jeep Wrangler, the Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Toyota 4Runner still produce high volume sales, and that Nissan’s moved only 12,200 Xterras year to date. Crossovers have become the new SUVs, and Nissan is well positioned in this segment with the Rogue, the Juke and the Murano. Does an updated Xterra even make sense to Nissan? Citing declining sales and tightening CAFE regulations, Larry Dominique, Nissan’s VP of Product Planning and Strategy doesn’t think so. Money spent on an Xterra redesign would be better spent on boosting fuel economy or seating capacity in Nissan’s range of crossovers. Still, the Xterra won’t disappear overnight and the Pathfinder will soldier on due to its three-row-seating capability. 2011 Nissan Juke. The Nissan Juke goes on sale in the U.S. in October, and there has been a lot of interest in the oddly styled compact crossover. Nissan claims that the exterior is “motosports inspired”, but I’m not seeing it, except maybe in the flared fenders. Let’s just agree on two things: the exterior styling is polarizing (you’ll either love it or hate it) but the interior looks well sorted and comfortable.

Nissan will be selling eight different versions of the Juke in the U.S., including five front drive and three AWD variants. Jukes will come with either a six speed manual transmission or a CVT, but AWD models come with the CVT only. I’m usually not a fan of continuously variable transmissions, but Nissan builds some of the best and I’d have no problem choosing an AWD Juke with the CVT. All Juke models are powered by a 1.6 liter, turbocharged four cylinder motor, good for 188 horsepower. Driver’s can select three driving modes, including Eco, Normal and Sport. In Eco mode, a front wheel drive Juke with the CVT can return up to 32 mpg on the highway. Pricing starts at $18,960 for the front wheel drive S version equipped with the CVT. The least expensive manual transmission Juke is the $20,260 SV version, and the SV with the CVT runs $20,760. The high end SL in FWD starts at $22,550 for the manual and goes to $23,050 for the SL version with the CVT. If you want AWD, pricing starts at $20,460 for an S version, goes to $22,260 for an SV version and tops out at $24,550 for an SL. I’ll get up a full review as soon as I’ve had the chance to drive one.
